Enhancing Readability and Engagement in Written and Verbal Formats 📚💬
#25 Son of a Viet Kieu | Content is king, format is kingdom!
Hey! I am so grateful to have you back at my blog. Your subscription means the world to me. ❤️ In order to get to know you better, here is a question for you: “What was your biggest learning lately?” 😊
Now jumping into today’s blog:
Sunday morning, 10:30 AM -
I have my laptop in front of me. I have my phone in my hand.
Thanks to my 7 years of experience as an educator, I've honed my multitasking skills. These skills are crucial now, as I need to take notes quickly; each slide and every point discussed is premium content. 📝💡
During this webinar, I learned multiple ways to adjust the format to make it easier for the audience to read your text.
Personally, I never really paid attention to that. But after the explanations, it all made sense. 🤔✨
Key “5-Second Learnings” to Be a Better Writer ✍️
Don’t Force Your Audience to Do Mukbang; Create a Fine Dining Experience
I never thought much about it before, but it makes sense. I looked up my online diary that I posted on a Facebook group during my time in New Zealand. Looking back, I feel overwhelmed because I wrote a blog with 15 lines in a paragraph, making my head hurt. 🤯
Now, I started to split the text into “bite-sized” pieces. Separating them with pictures or quotes not only helps the reader to rest after a “bite” but also provides a small teaser for the upcoming information. 🖼️📜
Don't Just Write Words, Write Music (Gary Provost)
We should also pay attention to the melody in our writing by creating shorter or longer sentences. It sounds simple, but I guess it will take a lot of practice to truly master it.
Pay Attention to the Energy Level of the Readers
There are two energies of the readers that we need to pay attention to: the energy for reading and the energy to understand.
Have you ever read a nice text that just flows? 🌊✨
By having a well-structured blog with interesting pictures, quotes, and smaller paragraphs, I won’t feel as exhausted.
Have you ever read a text where you forgot what you just read 10s ago? 🤷♀️🤔
That happens to me when I try to read a book at night. Since everything looks the same, my brain gets tired, and after a page, I feel exhausted.
When the format is structured well, the reader needs less energy to read the blog and can focus more on understanding the blog.
Does This Only Apply to Writing? 📝❓
NO.
I believe that this idea of paying attention to format applies not only to written communication but also to verbal communication.
At work, we often have to present in front of others, or in my case, often have to teach in front of many students.
Here, communication is key as well, and we obviously want others to understand as well! 💬🔑
Here, the speed, pauses, and volume can help us catch the audience's attention or give them a break. ⏩⏸️🔊
When I have slides during a meeting, they should support my presentation instead of having all the information on them. Instead of having long texts on the slides, I use key words and big pictures that help the audience have a short overview and avoid forcing them to read. 📊🖼️
Energy in the classroom is crucial - it decides whether your teaching is perceived as interesting or boring. By having “fun” or “interesting” games before harder tasks, I can build up momentum that will prepare students for the next tasks. 🎲🚀
Summary 📋
In this masterclass, I learned that the format of your writing significantly impacts how easily your audience can read and understand your content. By creating bite-sized paragraphs, varying sentence lengths, and being mindful of the readers' energy levels, you can make your writing more engaging and accessible. These principles also apply to verbal communication, where the pace, pauses, and structure of your presentation can enhance understanding and retention. By paying attention to these details, you can become a more effective communicator both in writing and speaking. ✍️🗣️
Thanks for reading to the end and I wish you an awesome day full of kindness and positivity. See you next Sunday morning for a new blog of #sonofavietkieu. 🥰
