Rediscovering Passion: Why Not Every Hobby Needs to Be a Hustle
#32 How Turning a New Creative Project into a Personal Sanctuary Helped Me Find Balance and Joy
Hey! I am so grateful to have you back at my blog. Your subscription means the world to me. ❤️ In order to get to know you better, here is a question for you: “What is your passion project?” 😊
Now jumping into today’s blog:
After scaling our cute German language meet up into a proper language school that supports students not only in learning German but also connects them to future employers in Germany, I realized that I had lost my passion - suddenly I was responsible for loads of things and had to make decision that not always lead to fun and party.
Now, I finally understand the quote:
”If you monetize your hobby, you need a new hobby.”
I started “Son of a Viet Kieu” because I was looking for another passion project. Something that had nothing to do with Deutsch Campus and teaching German.
Thanks to the blogging course “Writing on the net”, I learned many things that I could implement in “Son of a Viet Kieu”.
Now I do:
YouTube videos, where I walk at Sala and share my story in a Vlog format to practice peaking in front of a camera. 📽️
Write my blogs on Substack about my story in order to improve my writing skills ✍️
Create Reels/podcasts to practice speaking slowly and without filling words like uhhhhm 🎙️
Work on a design for my T-shirt in order to … well have a cool looking t-shirt 👕
I mainly spend my time during weekends to work on this passion project. I was finally able to create new stuff without the pressure and expectations that would come with a business, while learning new cool skills. In addition to that, I also received some positive feedback, that they find the content inspirational. I create a new project that would make me feel fulfilled.
A win - win - win situation!
During a chat with a friend last week, I realized something else. The friend of me asked whether I wanted to do non profit?
I smiled and said: “Yes, I do Son of a Viet Kieu.”
“I mean a non-profit organization with impact.” she replied. She continued by saying: “Son of a Viet Kieu is your hobby.”
It made me think for 37 seconds and I thought to myself: “I don’t want to invest more resources like time and energy to have a huge impact and commercialize it. That sounds like headache.”
I chose to do Son of a Viet Kieu to have a cute passion project that makes me happy. Something that helps me to think about something else than just Deutsch Campus.
Son of a Viet Kieu became my workshop, where I can try and experiment different things, just to have fun. And whoever wants to have a peak is more than welcome to join.
I might not have a big impact like the language school has, but it is more than enough to create a nice work life balance that makes me feel like I love my life. By being grateful for living my curiosity, spread love and positivity to a small audience, all my needs are met and I can recharge.

In the end, not every passion needs to be monetized or scaled. Sometimes, the greatest joy comes from creating simply for the sake of creating, without pressure or expectations. "Son of a Viet Kieu" reminded me that fulfillment isn’t always about making a big impact—it's about nurturing your curiosity and finding joy in the small things. By keeping this project as a space for fun and experimentation, I’ve rekindled my passion and found a healthy balance in life. Remember, it's okay to keep some passions just for you. Let them be your sanctuary, a place where creativity and happiness can thrive freely.
Thanks for reading to the end and I wish you an awesome day full of kindness and positivity. See you next Sunday morning for a new blog of #sonofavietkieu. 🥰 And remember: #yeudoi
